Military Financial Aid programs may be available to you and your dependants
Learn about schools and programs that can help you reach your educational goals
Military financial aid programs are the result of the GI Bill which was passed after World War II. It has helped finance the education of millions of military personnel and veterans. If you or your dependants qualify, these military aid programs are a great way to reduce your college costs.
Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC)
Next to the military academies, the best known military financial aid program is the ROTC program. ROTC scholarships are offered to qualified men and women who are enrolled in undergraduate college programs. Candidates must be U.S. citizens between the ages of 17 and 21 when they apply for a scholarship. There are physical requirements for acceptance into the program and a personal interview is required.
ROTC scholarships pay up to $8000 or 80% of college expenses and provide a monthly stipend for living expenses. Tuition and fees are paid directly to the school and are considered financial aid. The monthly stipend is paid to the student and is considered income. As income, it is taxable.
Students enrolled in the ROTC program are required to study military science while in college, participate in summer training sessions, amd maintain a grade point average determined by their school. Upon graduation, the participant is granted a military commission. ROTC participants must enroll in one of the Armed Forces and must agree to serve four years of active duty and two years in the reserve. Each branch of the Armed Forces has it's own ROTC scholarship program. For more information, check out ROTC Programs at a Glance.
